PATDEEP - THE LESS PREFERRED (IN ENGLISH)
In our Hindustani classical music there are some raagas which get neglected for no reason. One such Raaga is
Patdeep.
Patdeep is a sweet raaga of third prahar of the day. In this
Raaga Gandhar is Komal while all other swaras are Shuddha. In the Aaroh Rishabh
and Dhaivat are omitted and in the Avroh all swaras are taken. Because of this
even though the combination of the swaras is different, still the sequence of
the swaras in Patdeep is similar to Raagas like Bhimpalas, Madhuwanti, Multani
etc. (Sequence – NI SA GA MA PA NI SA, SA NI DHA PA MA GA RE SA’). And perhaps because
of this common factor this raaga may have got neglected a bit. Of course
inspite of that Patdeep still holds its separate, individual identity for sure.
‘GA MA PA NI, PA NI SA DHA PA, DHA MA PA GA, SA
GA MA GA RE SA’. These are few important phrases of Raaga Patdeep.
According to some,Patdeep is formed just by changing Bhimpalas Raaga’s Komal Nishad in to Shuddha
Nishad. But I don’t think so. Because even a single change in swara changes the
whole design of the Raaga. Like in this case, the Andolan of Bhimpalas’s Komal
Gandhar minimizes in Patdeep. Also the stay on Shuddha Madhyam in Bhimpalas
gets shifted to Pancham in Patdeep. So although it appears just a change of one
note ‘Shuddha Nishad’, but it influences
all the other swaras and it becomes an altogether different entity, a different
personality.
Couple of other important things that I would like to
mention are :-
1) Inspite of ‘SA NI DHA PA’ ‘NI SA DHA PA’ is used more often.
2) Although Dha is omitted in the Aaroh still many use the
phrase ‘GA MA PA NI, DHA NI SA DHA PA’. This phrase certainly does adds
to the beauty of this Raaga.
So if we study this Raaga minutely then we would find that
this Raaga certainly has its own identity and flavour.
Patdeep isn’t quite a Raaga to be stretched for a longer
duration. Very rarely one gets to listen Vilambit Khyals in this Raaga. Mostly
medium and fast paced compositions are favoured in Patdeep. While rendering Patdeep
Raaga if one keeps a bit fluent and pacy approach in the presentation then it
certainly has a better impact on the listeners.
